Episode 20: Simon Cron. From good to great

Today’s podcast is with former waratahs, northern suburbs and current Toyota Verblitz Coach Simon Cron. This episode was an absolute treat for me. As someone who has just joined the world of coaching i basically just asked things that i had always wanted to ask him. I could have honestly talked to him for hours. We talked about coaching, mentors including steve hansen, Wayne smith and his uncle Mike, changing cultures and a lot more. This is a fantastic podcast for rugby people

but even if your just interested in how to get the most out of a group of humans then it’s worth a listen. For me, i think in today’s day and age it’s rare to meet someone who is on a path to mastery, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they will get there, but even meeting people who are on the path is something to sit back and appreciate and in my opinion cronny is definitely on that path.  I really enjoyed this conversation and i hope you get as much out of it as i did.

Just a note, during the chat i asked him about what he changed at north’s to go from missing his finals the first year to winning it the next and we had a good chat about it. about 15 mins after he sent me this email which i promised him i would add into the audio

Mate the thing I probably missed the bus on was that the key to success across North’s was getting the right people in the club:

Getting great:

Coaches at grade and colts. My assistant in 2016 was gold and still coaches with me.

Head of S&C was a huge addition added at the end of 2015.

Managers and support staff.

Board support.

the Boys were surrounded by the best people!

Steve talks about getting people in the right seats on the bus and we did that at North’s:

The biggest two changes in staff from 2015-2016 was bringing in Rob Fowkes as Head of Athletic performance as he changed our physical make up and Will Eggleston as backs coach, he still coaches with me at Toyota.

To get success players need to be surrounded by great people and we achieved that with the coaches below first grade as well as the managers and a supportive board.
