There Are No Rules.
I’m writing this to help me understand a concept floating around my brain at the moment.
One of the things that happens when you start a business and begin to put content out on the internet is that you get advice from all sorts of well meaning people.
“ You should focus on one area”
“ You should diversify”
“ Don’t Swear”
“ Do swear”
“ You need to be serious more”
“ You need to share more memes”
“ You must have a plan before you start”
“ Just start and work it out as you go”
Confusing?, I agree.
Contemplating where i am going to take this thing has led me down a very interesting mental path.
How many times in your life have you thought “I can’t do that, I’m not good enough”?
In my case my internal monologue for much of my life has looked something like this.
“ You’re not as smart as that guy, you wont be up to it”
“ You’re not well known, so how are you going to make it in independent media”
“ You never played professional rugby, how are you going to coach at an elite level and have credibility”
“You don’t have a tonne of money, how are you going to start a brewery”
“ You are not Elon Musk, how are you going to do all of this”
“ You have to be more serious if you want to pursue these things otherwise people will not take you seriously”
While i was getting kicked in the head at Muay Thai Monday morning this thought popped into my head. (almost as if it was transferring from the foot of my opponent into my brain) “who says you can’t”.
A lightbulb went off.
All my life i have put restrictive rules on myself.
Why?
For me,
i compare myself to people i admire.
I often get swept up in the pressure that society places upon us all &
I don’t like criticism and i generally want to make other people happy.
I feel stupid re-reading that.
Another Lightbulb.
Here’s the thing
There is no one like you.
If you do what everyone else does you will get what everyone else gets.
Critics are usually unhappy in themselves and criticism is usually a reflection of their own issues. It’s not about you.
If you want to tread the well worn path there is nothing wrong with that. That’s not an option for me.
Blaze your own path and keep going.
All my love. Bear.
